I only play for a few days, but I have a natural affinity for tanks and for all the compliments I get in the game I think I must be a very good player with Malphite.
Being said this, My tips for Malphite would be getting the first skill as Seismic Shard and the second Skill will be Brutal strikes. At first levels don't ever use your mana in Brutal Strikes, in low levels it's power isn't decisive and it' only ends in wasting your mana that you need to use your Seismic Shard. Use SS to slow the opponents rather than dealing damage, use it if you need to run, since it reduces enemy speed allowying you to run away from them. Or If you have a good partner (Malphite will level faster in middle but will take greater risk, being attacked certanly by a ranged champion or not getting enough gold for sticking to your team turret, but the true purpose of Malphite in my opinion is to tank, and soo you must be at top or bottom with a partner. If you follow my tips correctly you will achieve a new kind of illumination state in Malphite =P)
Setting traps as for example using a partner like ryse, wich has low hp and its mana can be depleted soon and if not covered by another champ, it will be a good decoy in setting a trap, using the right time to spring the trap, using minions and the best spells of ryze, if ryze can burn a enemy champ Hp very fast, malphite will intercep with it's SS to slow them down and dealing damage, casters are more susceptable to this this damage and Malphite will slay him for sure, no chance of avoiding it. Hide Malphite in bushes but not the ones inbetween the turrets but the ones toward the middle of the map. People always forget about that place. Of course if the enemy chap is getting away and closer to their turret, don't think too much and activate Brutal Strikes.
As you level Malphite, always upgrade your level of SS first and BS later. Stop this procedure as when you can unlock Unstopable Force. This skill will streght your trap possabilities and enhance your fighting skills, be it stoping the opponents movement, dealing damage, running away, etc.
About items, I've payed a lot of attencion to what people who are true players get, and I've tested it out. It really works (!!!).
Get Heart of Gold, first the crystal, then the armor. After go for Mercurys Treads, This will prevend numberous of bad status on Malphite, it will provide him more speed and above all give him a bit of the lot of lacking magic resistance he truelly needs!
Done that, if your team manages to be on a tie or have +/- 1/2 turrets than the enemy and is a good team, and by a good team i don't mean an overpowering team that pulverizes the gameplay of it's adversaries. No, by a good team I mean, one that doesn't panic, has good team play, doesnt get pushed to a corner or start leaving, even if they are losing 2 turrets. Malphite is slow, mistakes happen, but when he is level 10 and you at least have this items together and if not start going for the next one. Believe me, Malphite will turn the tides and will be a huge thorn in their boots! Being this said, when you have level 10 and have these 2 items, say to your team if they have trouble, 'Defend' or 'Let me solo por a bit'.
Now for the overpower, these two only meant to prevent Malphite to die and accelerate his growth. Now we will give him more offensive capabilities and later HP!
The 3rd item will be Bloodthirstier. Get first the vampiric staff and then the Sword. This will provide Malphite a bit more of damage and garatie more minutes of carnage. Deaths mean more exp and gold. Download yosemite dmg without app store. Your solo mentality goes 100% from here on (you could engage a bit sooner). You will be the enemy towers destroyer, go with your minions and garatee a safe passage for them to reach the enemy tower and serve as a shield to it's firepower. Until you reach it, you will gain the stacks of bloodthristier withc is good! When you reach the tower, 2 secs more will reach a new wave of minions, kill them for the gold because the next items will be expensive. You rminions will resist longer than they, you must kill them so they dont distract your minions from the tower and prevent they stealing possible gold!!! when you done that, attack the tower, I played numberous of games with Malphite, never saw less than 2 or 3 of our team minions to be alive before you killed the turret. To fasten the travel, before reaching the turret use brutal strikes to prevent damage to your meat shields (minions), let BS to recharge and engage the enemy minions when you reach enemy turret, and when attacking it, activate once again BS.
Malphite with the Bloodthirstier stacks, will not deal under than 120 damage or so and by activating BS it will reach beyond 200 damage each strike! You will be delighted to see that few champions cant take a simple blow on a turret and take soo many life points from it.. Malphite is awsome, soo far we enhance its HP, armor and magic resistance points and now damage.
4th item will be Phantom dancer! More speed, attack speed, dodge and critical strike (you will LOL at how damage you will do to any enemy champ!). Phantom is a very good item but until you reach it, it neads lots of gold, soo we used it before in items that will prevent you from dying and getting more possabilities to earn more gold, and heart of gold generates more gold. Phantom will give you attack speed and critical strike, wich conferes with bloodthirstier with a good sinergy. More movement and doge will give you a strong possability to prevent your from dying when being cornered or being set a trap!
5 item will boost you, Trinity force. More mana, more hp, more critical strike, more a lot of things.. no need to explain, this item will make you a big bad slaying machine. Since you wont get zeal, sheen and phagetogether, i would say to you to get zeal first, and phage second. You cant have sheen so wait until you reach 1500 to get trinity full force! Believe me, it will be faster than what you expect, no need to sell the first 2 items and they will still be usefull!
6 item is warmog's armor, it will give you lots of HP and a lot of regen capability.
Getting this far, if the game still goes on, sell heart of gold and mercury treads to get frozen heart. Another item with sinergy capabilities and more lols to add to your fun, seing the damage be it big or small with your curret hp and ap, it will decrease very slim proportions from your hp bar! This will be your 7th item.
the 8th and last, with your critical strikes soo often, i would tell you to go to infinity edge. Even I didnt get it soo far and the longest game i ever played reached for about 1 hour (did over 250 minion kills and destroyed 5 structures 25 champs slayed and 21 deaths 7 assists), did not managed to get the 8th item.
Other usefull items that may used well on malphite would be beserker greaves, wits end, rod of ages, Guardian angel (If you have until phantom dancer and you are a good player that doesnt go rambo and die all the time, you soon will reach warmogs armor and thats preferable to this, also if you dont die a lot, why getting the guardian angel :P) and sunfire cape. Also used for some time Randuin's omen, for some experiments, good bonus, but i kept forgeting it's active ability. and if not used, there are better or cheaper items to buy first that do the same things more or with less probability and with other side effects!
Now do you see why i go solo when i play malphite and reach it over 10 levels? I get stacks for Bloodthristier, get more hp from Warmogs and also gold, with targets for turrets I activate BS and create a safe passage for minions and champs in a few seconds.
Most of the deaths i've got was dued to my slow growth with malphite, since he is slow. we cant kill champs like others can. That is, until you get level 18, BS for more damage, SS is majoretly used for slowing champs at this point. to engage combate preferably use unstopable force and when fighting 2 champs, use ground slam to reduce their attack speed!
The items above will give above all, HP, soo the innate ability of Malphite will enhance, with armor, ground slam will deal more damage (dont use it against minions, your armor will prevent damage and life drain will replenish your HP and above all, it consumes your mana), SS and UF will improve with trinity force but not much, the best of it is the other bonus as attack speed, critical strike and hp&mana
When level 18, with at least 4 items and not attacked by 2 champs at same time, I dont have any necessity to teleport and regen and replenish HP and MP.
PS: This only applies to 5vs5, in 3vs3 I don't know if it's the best combo!
PS2: If in 5vs5 there is really 5vs4 and you are in minority, Malphite is a good and if not best defender (possible best concorrent is heimerdinger)!
PS3: Worst opponents to Malphite in beggining is facing a ranged opponent or assassin like Akali/shen or Heimerdinger/ezreal, if you meet her, retreat and ask to change positions to the other side!

I mean come on! They're both one of the best tanks who can turn an entire game around. They can put their noses into the middle of the team and it wouldn't hurt too much (Unless they overstay of course). Just look at this Unstoppable Force from Gamsu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=db20zw3Kwjw Zac isn't all that bad either. SO WHY DO NONE OF THEM HAVE A SINGLE GAME IN THE LCS THIS SPLIT????!!! (also, im not mentioning Vi cause Vi's ult and CC are targeted to only a singular champion whereas Zac and Malph can affect an entire team)
